University of Rojava
The University of Rojava was founded in Qamişlo in 2016, in the midst of the war, conflict, and extraordinary situation in Syria, in particular in Rojava/North and East of Syria. In this regard, it is an outcome of the Rojava Revolution. The university offered an opportunity to students who had to suspend their education programs due to the conflict in Syria and geographical disconnection. Since then the university’s faculties and departments have welcomed more than 1500 students.
The foundation process of the university is ongoing as it takes the universal experiences in higher education as a model while adopting historical, social and philosophical values of Mesopotamia. The university acknowledges and uses modern techniques in scientific and academic works and believes that the concept of education in the Middle East should be redefined. The education model that imposes authoritarianism on the society has prevented the people from realizing their capacities and creativity. This model creates a memorizing mind, dogmatic beliefs and people who are far from innovation and critical thinking, and this has been one of the foundational reasons behind the conflicts in the Middle East. The university claims to play a historical role in correcting this mistake and has identified duties and objectives to realize this claim.
Duties and Objectives
The University of Rojava aims to create a critical and innovative environment to train a new generation that produces and uses scientific research and knowledge at a higher level. A society and individual who respects nature, society and women, and communicates with all cultures, beliefs and races. The primary goal of the UoR is to graduate individuals who are able to undertake and complete all social and political duties with their scientific, social, and ethical background. The UoR also aims to make the connection between science and life more visible. It is important that students practice in their life the theoretical background they gained from the social sciences and natural sciences programs, and by doing this they become professional researchers.
Campuses
There are three campuses of the University: Qamishlo, Rimêlan, and Hesekê Most faculties and the administration center of the university are located in the city of Qamişlo The Faculty of Petroleum is located in Rimêlan and the Faculty of Ecological Civil Engineering is located in Hesekê. There are seven student dormitories in all three campuses where close to 700 students from the region reside.
